The program will introduce master choreographer Antony Tudor into college and university dance programs through a series of master classes focusing on Tudor's masterpiece, Jardin aux Lilas. The experimental, interdisciplinary week will look at this classic ballet from the perspective of various arts' disciplines.
Plans are under way for a documentary to be part of the process.

WHAT IS IT?
The Tudor Workshop is a ground breaking, inter-disciplinary pilot dance program to be held at Principia College from December 27th through January 1st. This invitation only event will include advanced ballet dancers from Principia College and other local institutions. This program has been approved by Sally Bliss of The Tudor Trust and will be conducted by Tudor répétiteurs Amanda McKerrow and John Gardner. Its goal is to introduce master choreographer, Antony Tudor, into college and university dance programs through a series of master classes focusing on Tudor's masterpiece, "Jardin aux Lilas".
WHAT MAKES IT "INTER-DISCIPLINARY"?
Principia is committed to enriching the dance experience in higher education through focusing on a master choreographer, Antony Tudor(1907-1987), and including complimentary disciplines. Professors from Principia's Music, Theatre, English and Design Departments, along with guest Professor Margaret Eginton from Asolo Conservatory, have been invited to conduct master classes designed specifically to enable dancers to grow in their appreciation of all the varied elements that go into a choreographic masterpiece. We believe this sort of cross-disciplinary intensive can be very powerful and enlightening to both students and Professors.
WHO WILL BENEFIT?
Attendance will be by invitation only and will include advanced ballet dancers from Principia College and other local institutions. A final "informal presentation" will take place on January 1st at Principia College where the work from the week will be presented by the dancers and guest artists.
WHAT IS THE BIGGER PICTURE?
Antony Tudor's ability to portray the human condition through the vocabulary of classical ballet is legendary. His attention to honest gesture, musicality and story make him a ballet choreographer who has much to teach college dance students. Higher education, at its best, seeks to unite disciplines that can enrich and inform each other. This is the larger goal of this workshop. Choosing the classic ballet, "Jardin aux Lilas", as the instrument for this experiment presents many opportunities. Much like a music student who studies a Beethoven symphony, our students will delve deeply into a dance masterpiece and bring it to life, for themselves and the audience.
